Heaven & Hell were an English and American heavy metal supergroup active from 2006 to 2010. The band was a collaboration featuring Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler along with former members Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice.

The four members of Heaven & Hell recorded and toured together as Black Sabbath from 1980 to 1982, and again from 1991 to 1992. After the foursome reunited to record three new songs for the 2006 compilation album, Black Sabbath: The Dio Years, they embarked on a 2007–2008 tour. Iommi, owner of the Black Sabbath name, decided to call the touring group Heaven & Hell to differentiate the project from the Ozzy Osbourne led Black Sabbath. The moniker was taken from the first Dio-fronted Black Sabbath album, Heaven and Hell.
The group disbanded following Dio's death from stomach cancer in 2010.

Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty (born October 20, 1950) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Myths about Left-handed Guitars and Left handed Guitarists SHOT DOWN IN FLAMES

There are various very FALSE "ideas" floating around about on the subject of learning to play guitar that have to do with being left or right handed. These ideas stem from ignorant right handed guitarists, lazy guitar teachers, or money-motivated sales staff at musical instrument shops who are on kickbacks from some particular guitar brand, and sometimes even from bitter and twisted left-handed guitarists themselves who somehow feel "cursed." However the latter only comes about because of the former.

Mainly these myths have sprung up because of lack of overall knowledge with the unfortunate consequence of these false data influencing people in their choices of playing or learning guitar.

Let's get one thing very straight. These common misconceptions ARE myths.

A myth ceases to be a myth once it has been revelaed to be otherwise. It is dispelled by providing TRUE DATA, ie. "the Truth."

So, lefty guitarists and right handed guitarists can equally learn something here. You may be very surprised to know some new things here or have some misconceptions dispelled. I hope so!

MYTH ONE. "A guitar is like a piano. There is only one way to play it."

This is one of the biggest, outmoded, ignorant, and totally incorrect statements there is on this subject. Yes, a piano is played one way. No, a guitar is not played one way.
In fact, the way people play guitars in Rock and Pop music today, in would benefit a right handed person to actually play guitar left handed - with his or her dominant hand on the fret board, instead of the other way round which is the traditional way. For modern music, it is not about being just a "strummer" like it was 100 years ago. Guitar playing has EVOLVED. Isn't it surprising that some of the world's best guitarists are left handed people playing guitar right handed - the reverse scenario?

MYTH TWO. "It is harder to learn guitar left-handed in a world dominated by right-handed teachers and right handed instruction books."

This is a doozer. In fact learning guitar left handed is EASIER from a right-handed teacher than a left-handed teacher because everything the teacher shows you is a MIRROR IMAGE of what you are doing and easier to follow! Right handed guitarists learning from a right handed teacher have to do a mental switcheroo to get what they are doing right! That is an extra step a lefthanded learner does not have to take!
And books? There are books for lefthanded instruction. They exist and they are not hard to get. There aren't as many but that is a good thing. Less possibilities of confusion. Right handed guitar instruction materials are so abundant that there is an OVERSATURATION of material which frankly makes anyone giddy when trying to make sense of it all.

MYTH THREE. "You can't get many left-handed guitars." Or "It's hard to find a left handed guitar."

This WAS true until recently. In 2006 an Australian company called Gaskell Guitars came to be. Gaskell Guitars makes left handed guitars and basses EXCLUSIVELY, and is the only company in the world that does.

Gaskell has grown in the last few years to be the number one brand in the world for left handed guitars. Several major guitar brands have stopped making lefthanded guitars: Gibson, Paul Reed Smith, Rickenbacker. They stopped due to "lack of demand." That is another myth.

MYTH FOUR. "There is not much demand for left handed guitars"

This is the biggest myth of the lot. This idea is definitely a commercially motivated right handed guitar manufacturer's point of view. Although there are much less left handed guitarists in the world there are still many. Lefty guitarists do exist - and they are all over the world - young and old. This is a fact that right handed guitar companies will never be aware of because they operate on TURNOVER and their turnover consists of right handed guitars. Understandable, but not true!

If you are a left handed guitarist reading this realize this: there are plenty of people like you in the world - PLENTY!

You do not need to feel bad about being a left handed guitarist.

And parents take note, let your son or daughter play the way they feel is comfortable for them. Do not change that because some lazy teacher or kick-back motivated shop salesman tries to tell you otherwise. There is a lot of garbage still thrown around on this subject. Realize they are self-serving myths and don't fall prey to that!

Never Say Die is a live video by heavy metal band Black Sabbath. It was recorded on the 10th Anniversary tour in June 1978, at London's Hammersmith Odeon.

In the UK it was one of the earliest music home videos, being released on both the Betamax and VHS formats, the latter being repackaged and reissued several times on VHS. It was also a Japanese laserdisc release and is now on DVD. The running-time is some 60 minutes (dropping some of the guitar solo and band improvisation, by comparison with ROIO from the same tour), this being the length of the commercial videotape cassettes. It would be unusual if the entire show had not been filmed, before subsequent editing, although the DVD release was the same as the videotape and laserdisc releases: it is unknown whether the full concert exists still on mastertape.

The tour opened 15 September 2010 in Toronto, and moved through North America before ending the first leg of the tour in Mexico City, 21 December 2010. Waters has expressed wishes to visit other areas with the show after the European leg, but as of yet nothing has been announced.

Waters, a pacifist, has incorporated an increased emphasis on the show's anti-war message, and he has requested that fans send in pictures of loved ones who have died as a result of wars. Waters has published on his Facebook page, many of the pictures of projections made onto building's walls in urban areas, of a speech Dwight D. Eisenhower held before the American Society of Newspaper Editors 16 April 1953:

The 22-minute version of "Machine Gun" includes walkie-talkie interference from security personnel feeding through the sound equipment. The CD set is more thorough than the DVD release as it contains "Midnight Lightning", "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)", and "Hey Joe", three songs omitted from the DVD. There was also a "highlights" album released as a single disc, which contained 11 songs; 9 from disc 1, and 2 from disc 2.

The show was typical in several ways of both Thin Lizzy shows and Gary Moore ones. As always with Thin Lizzy, "Cowboy Song" was followed by "The Boys Are Back in Town" and "Whisky in the Jar" is part of the encore. When Moore covered "Don't Believe a Word" as a solo artist he slowed it down into a ballad; here he begins performing his version before switching mid-song to the Thin Lizzy style rock song. As is always so with Moore, he closed on "Parisienne Walkways". Robertson and Gorham performed only songs they originally performed with Thin Lizzy, but in playing the closer Eric Bell was different. The DVD also contains the unveiling of a statue of Phil Lynnott in Grafton Street, Dublin earlier that day and rehearsals and interviews with Thin Lizzy members who featured in this concert.

The guitar (violao) is a musical instrument that utilizes strings to produce sound. Usually, guitar is made with six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten and twelve string guitars are not rare.

Guitar (violao) is considered as an instrument in many forms of music like blues, country, flamenco, rock and even pop. Acoustically playing, the guitar involves production of the tone by vibration of the string and modulation by the hollow body. Electronic manipulation can also be done on the tone using an amplifier.

Combinations of various woods, with either nylon or steel strings are used for the construction of guitars. The person who makes and repairs string instruments like guitar is called a luthier.

History and development of string instruments similar to guitar (violao) can be traced back to at least 5,000 years. In those days, when synthetic material was not available for making guitars, a guitar was defined as `a long, fretted neck, flat wooden soundboard, ribs, and a flat back instrument, most often with incurved sides`.

There are two major types of guitars:

Acoustic guitar (violao): A soundboard (present in the front of the guitar body in the form of a piece of wood) is used to produce the sound from this kind of guitars. No external arrangement or device is needed to produce sound. This makes the acoustic guitar quieter than other commonly found band or orchestra instruments and often an external amplifier is used to make the guitar sound audible and to match the sound of other band instruments. The latest range of acoustic guitars come with a host of pick-ups for amplifying and modifying the raw guitar sound.

Within the acoustic guitar type, the sub-categories include: Classical guitars; Flamenco guitars; Steel string guitars (include the flat top or `folk` guitar); Twelve string guitars; Arch-top guitars; Renaissance or Baroque guitars; Resonator, resophonic or Dobro guitars; Russian guitars; Acoustic bass guitars; Tenor guitars; Harp guitars; Extended range guitars; Guitar battente.

Electric guitars: Electric guitar bodies are solid, semi-hollow or hollow. The sound produced is little and low without amplification. An amplifier forms an integral part of electric guitars. Vibrations of steel strings converted into electric signals by electromagnetic pick-ups are fed in to an amplifier using a cable or radio transmitter. The sound is often modified either using electronic devices or through distortion of valves naturally. The pick-ups here are of two types: single line or double line, each can be either active or passive. Electric guitar sound is most commonly used in jazz, rock-n-roll and blues style of music.

Construction of the guitar (violao) is based on whether the player is left-handed or right-handed. Usually, players use their dominant hand to pluck the strings. For most of the people, it is the right hand. The other hand of the player is on the frets for depressing and gripping guitar strings.

The various major guitar components include: headstock, nut, fretboard, frets, truss rod, inlays, neck, heel or neck joint, strings, guitar body and pickups.

There are certain accessories that might be helpful while playing a guitar (violao). Accessories like: Plectrum - also called the guitar pick, is used for picking the strings. It is made of a plastic like hard material; Slides - used for creating glissando effect in blues and rock genre of music. Neck of a bottle, knife blade or round metal bar, any of these can be used as a slide; Copatasto - it is used for changing pitch of open strings.

As you can see above, starting from the bottom, the 6th string is tuned to the note 'E', the 5th is 'A', 4th is 'D', 3rd is 'G', 2nd is 'B' and the 1st is 'e'. Notice how I use a Capital 'E' and small 'e' for the 6th and 1st strings, this is to show the difference between the low E and high e string.

This has shown which notes should correspond with each string in 'Standard Tuning' (EADGBe).

At this stage, because you now know this information, you could easily use a pitch pipe or electric tuner which you can buy from any of your local music stores or online stores. However if you want to learn how you can tune your guitar without the use of a tuner then just read on...

If someone handed you a guitar and asked you to tune it, you would either have to have a really musical ear, or have one of the strings already in tune. For this lesson make sure your top string (E, 6th) is in tune, if you are unsure you could use a piano, a tuned guitar, or even a YouTube video to match the sound of that string.

If you start to practice listening to the sound of the top E string now, eventually you will be able to tune the guitar by ear. Using the help of the method below you will be able to tune your guitar on your own without the use of any equipment.

We are going to use a method called relative tuning. At this point you should have your low E string in tune. The reason we call it 'relative tuning' is because we are going to be tuning a string relative to the string above it, the first example is tuning the A(5th) string to the already tuned E(6th) string. I'll show you what I mean:

We already have our E string in tune, so now take the following steps:

1. The 5th fret of the Low E, is the same sound as the A string open, so play the E string with your finger on the 5th fret and the sound you hear is what the A string should sound like. All you have to do now is tune that open A until it matches the sound of the 5th fret on the top E string.

2. Same as above except you are using the 5th fret of the A string you just tuned to tune the D string. Turn the tuning peg of the open D string until you can match the sound of the A strings 5th fret.

3. Same as above except you are using the 5th fret of the newly tuned D string to tune the open G

4. This time there is a difference when tuning the B string relative to the tuned G string. Instead of using the 5th fret, like we have done previously, we use the 4th fret, this is the only one which is different. The method is still the same just make sure to use the 4th fret of the G when tuning the B.

5. Once you have tuned the B string you are now onto the last string (the high e). To tune the high e string using the B just use the exact same pattern as you did in steps 1, 2 and 3 above.

Another point to make is that the 6th and 1st strings are the same note (both E), so if one of them is in tune then it can be used to tune the other simply by playing them both at the same time and adjusting whichever is out of tune until they match up.

Like most things, the more you repeat this method, the better you will become at it. Once you manage to tune your guitar the first time, it gets easier, as most of the time it is quite close to the correct tuning already. The more you hear the sound of a tuned guitar the more your ear will be trained into knowing that sound. Even if it's just the top string you recognize, then you can use the relative tuning method to tackle the rest. Now you have your guitar tuned you can start learning all your favourite songs. The Stratocaster guitar was designed in 1954 by Leo Fender, George Fullerton, and Freddie Tavares in response to the needs of working guitarists of the time. Fender's goal was to design the best electric guitar ever made and he incorporated several new design "firsts" into the Stratocaster guitar.

The most important of the new design features was a contoured body style that Fender called the "Comfort Contour Body". The back of the guitar was contoured to fit comfortably and smoothly against the player instead of having the hard, square edge found on the Fender Telecaster body.

In addition, the front of the guitar was contoured to allow your arm to rest comfortably on the guitar while playing. Also, the body featured double cutaways near the neck to allow easy access to the highest frets, help reduce the weight of the guitar, and improve the overall balance of the guitar.

The earliest Stratocasters came in a 2-color sunburst finish on a solid, contoured ash body with a one piece maple neck containing 21 frets, black dot inlays, Kluson Deluxe tuners and the guitar featured a synchronized tremolo bridge with "whammy bar".

Later, Fender began offering the Stratocaster in brilliant solid colors such as Daphne Blue, Surf Green, and Fiesta Red which were popular in the automobile industry at the time and gave the Stratocaster a modern, "cool" appeal.

The Stratocaster guitar was the first solid body electric guitar to feature three single coil pickups. The early models came with a three-way pickup switch for selecting either the neck, middle, or bridge pickups.

However, guitarists realized you could wedge the switch in between positions to simultaneously select either the neck and middle pickups, or the middle and bridge pickups to mix the signals from two pickups and create new sounds. Because of this player inspired trick, Fender created the five-way pickup switch which has been a standard feature since 1977.

Another novel design feature was the single-ply "drop in" pickguard that allowed all the electronics such as pickups, selector switch, volume and tone controls to be mounted on one removable surface making the Stratocaster easier to mass produce, repair, and customize.

Leo Fender set out to design the best guitar ever made and no one would argue that it is truly one of the best guitars in the world. The results speak for themselves as the Stratocaster guitar is still one of the most popular and commercially successful guitars of all time. It's popularity continues to be driven by countless guitarists who love the style, playability, and versatile tonal qualities of this truly legendary guitar.

Whether you're thinking about taking guitar lessons or you're already a student, you should consider what your role will be in achieving success with the guitar. If you've done your research and selected a teacher with excellent credentials and an agreeable personality then the next step is to learn how to get the most out of your lessons. Here's a few pointers to increase your chance of success.

Communicate your goals
Find a teacher that you have a good rapport with and communicate your goals with them. Your teacher will likely suggest certain concepts to learn like note reading, rhythmic notation, chord playing, and classical or plectrum picking techniques to meet these goals. If you want to learn a certain rock song or two then don't be embarrassed to tell your teacher as it gives them a good idea of what you'll need to learn to achieve this. Some students don't seem to know what they want to learn, so have an answer for this so your teacher can better serve you and keep your interest.

Record your lessons
Record your lessons with a digital recorder. It's well worth the investment to buy a digital recorder and then compile your lessons on disc or onto a hard drive. In the excitement of the lesson you'll forget much of your teacher's advice and it takes too much of your lesson time for you or your teacher to write everything down. It's also extremely valuable to hear your teacher play examples of what you're working on.

Practice
Ask your teacher how to practice and for how long. How you practice is more important than how much time you practice, but you still need to spend an adequate amount of time with your instrument to be successful. One of the most common statements teachers hear from students every week is "I didn't get a chance to practice this week." If your spending the money on lessons make sure you have the desire and time to give it an honest effort. Everybody has a bad practice week and a good teacher understands that. Just don't make it every week! It's like exercise (except much more fun). Once you start doing it, it gets easier and more fun the more you practice.

Inspire yourself!
Your teacher should take part of the responsibility for this but the rest is up to you. This may sound obvious but...listen to music! It's hard to believe but some people (usually younger students) want to play guitar but don't really listen to much music. It's hard to be inspired if there is nothing to aspire to. You need to listen to something that makes you say, "I want to play that!" Youtube videos are great for this, as are the various online radios like Pandora and Rhapsody. Go to concerts and local gigs that interest you. Find out if there's a guitar society in your area. Depending on their focus, they'll often have free classical guitar concerts with local artists and for-pay big name artists throughout the year. You'll want to practice more after watching and listening to excellent players.

Be open minded
Consider learning music that's outside of what you normally listen to. Many students find new musical interests through playing the guitar as there's exciting playing across the genres.

Keeping your teacher updated on your interests
It's not uncommon to discover new interests as you're learning, so make sure to tell your teacher about your interests as they unfold. Your teacher will be glad to see your interest and will be motivated to help you in your new pursuits. There's no bigger indicator of success than an excited and motivated student.

Express your frustration to your teacher
If you're getting frustrated and bored with a certain exercise or piece of music, then let your teacher know. Don't be too hasty in doing this and start suggesting changing songs every week. This is a bad habit that many students have. If something seems difficult or uninteresting, try to stick it out for a while before throwing in the towel. You'll only get better through challenging yourself but if you're really sick of it then speak up before you burn out. It may be something that can be revisited later.

Change teachers
If you become strongly interested in a style that your teacher does not excel in and that you want to spend a significant amount of time on, then consider changing teachers. An honest teacher will tell you that your interest is not their strong suit and they can help you in other areas but that you're better off with someone else for that technique or style. Also, if your teacher just doesn't seem to care about your interests then it's time for a change. If you've communicated with your teacher your desires, practiced, and listened well, and they just don't listen to you or can't help you with what you want to learn then you've done all that you can and should move on.

Being a good student involves discipline, listening well (recording lessons), good communication with your teacher, being open minded, and staying inspired. If you do your part, you're likely to have a very good experience with guitar lessons and will accomplish your goals. You will probably also develop new interests along the way. When practicing your guitar, it's important to set goals. You want to set goals so that you can check your progress and your results and that you are analyzing how well you are doing with your guitar playing.

Goal setting is something that is very important to the development of your skills as a guitarist. When setting goals, you will want to start small at first. Set a goal to learn a few new cords first, and then start practicing to your favorite tunes. Next you will want to learn how to master entire songs all within a 20-30 minute span. You don't want to overload yourself on practice time so a 20-30 minute span is sufficient.

Setting goals such as these will allow you to attain the guitar mastery that you are looking for. By writing out your goals, you will be able to track your guitar playing success, and it will most likely come true.

If this sounds obvious to you, then you should know that it is. And because it's so obvious, you should do your best to follow what you write out so that you can attain the guitar playing success that you're looking for.

If you set a goal saying that you want to learn the harmonics, then write it out and set out a course of action to practice playing the harmonics. This will let you know how much you've progressed and what else you need to do in order to play the harmonics better.

Here are more great tips for setting goals when it comes to playing the guitar:

1) Set short and long-term goals

Your short term goals can be something such as learning a new cord while your long-term goals could be to master playing new songs. You won't reach your long-term goals before your short term ones, so it's important that you set both. If you're truly serious about becoming great with guitar playing, then you will need to set both short term and long-term goals.

2) Read your goals everyday

When you read your goals everyday, you remind yourself of the reasons you're practicing for. If one of your long-term goals is to play in nightclubs in your city, then everyday that you practice you should envision yourself playing in a nightclub and achieving success. But you won't reach this goal until all of your short term ones are reached first, so be sure to keep this in mind.

3) Check off your goals as you complete them

After each practice session or each week, check off a short term goal that you completed. This will help you to track your program and will help you to feel more successful and confident about your guitar playing. Soon enough after you check off all your short term goals, your long-term goals will be accomplished and you will be the awesome guitar player that you always dreamed of.

Well, whatever it is that you want to do or whatever your motivation is to play the guitar, you still have to go through the same steps like everyone else to learn how to play the guitar.

At first glance, it may seem that the guitar slashing is a pretty easy job. But in reality, it isn’t. It takes a lot of commitment to be able to achieve what you want to achieve when it comes to the guitar skills that you would like to learn. Most beginners are unable to sing a song and play the guitar at the same time when they start out. It is important that you listen carefully to the songs that you want to play. Try to listen to it for about two or three times. You can even memorize it if you want. Then you can practice playing the song very slowly. You can do it stanza by stanza and sing along as you practice strumming the guitar.

Guitar practice Tips - Here's my 'High five' to get you going!

Tip 1:
Break your guitar practice time into sets of 33.33 minutes! Yeah, I know what you're thinking, but trust me on this, it has been proved to be be the maximum time a human can keep peak concentration, after this time you are in to diminishing returns...

So why not adapt it to our guitar practice time? If nothing else it helps us achieve some discipline to are practice sessions.

So use a stop watch or your mobile to set each block of practice...It works!...I find that I am less inclined to make excuses, as I can always find at least half an hour a day and on some days you will have more time and inclination to do more 33.33 minutes sessions

IMPORTANT! Just make sure you take a 10 minute breaks in between them!

Tip 2:
Make sure you have a balanced guitar practice diet!
I would advise you to use each block of time on just one area per session ie scales for one 33.33 session and then arpeggios for another 33.33 session...And say chords for another and so on...Oh and don't forget your own play time too!

Tip 3:
Take things slow when learning a new song, scale or chord progression take your time and make sure you get it right...Speed will come my friend! It is far better to get it correct in the first place.

Tip 4:
Get together with friends or other guitar players and jam...Your practice time will be far more fun when you get together with like minded musicians, What? got no guitar playing friends!...well join a local guitar club or even start your own who knows where things will lead...

Tip 5:
Get a good teacher that can set you nice fun guitar practice sessions or join online forums ...there are plenty of good folks out on the 'net' that are more than willing to share there guitar practice tips etc

Most of all enjoy what you do set goals and keep a vision of your guitar playing future!

Jean "Django" Reinhardt ( 23 January 1910 – 16 May 1953) was a Gypsy jazz guitarist.

One of the first prominent European jazz musicians, Reinhardt remains one of the most renowned jazz guitarists. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli , he cofounded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, described by critic Thom Jurek as "one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz." Reinhardt's most popular compositions have become jazz standards, including "MinorSwing", "Belleville", "Djangology", "Swing '42" and "Nuages" (French for "Clouds").

At the age of 18, Reinhardt was injured in a fire that ravaged the caravan he shared with Florine "Bella" Mayer, his first wife. They were very poor, and to supplement their income Bella made imitation flowers out of celluloid and paper. Consequently, their home was full of this highly flammable material. Returning from a performance late one night, Reinhardt apparently knocked over a candle on his way to bed. While his family and neighbors were quick to pull him to safety, he received first- and second-degree burns over half his body. His right leg was paralysed and the third and fourth fingers of his left hand were badly burned. Doctors believed that he would never play guitar again and intended to amputate one of his legs. Reinhardt refused to have the surgery and left the hospital after a short time; he was able to walk within a year with the aid of a cane.
His brother Joseph Reinhardt, an accomplished guitarist himself, bought Django a new guitar. With rehabilitation and practice he relearned his craft in a completely new way, even as his third and fourth fingers remained partially paralyzed. He played all of his guitar solos with only two fingers, and used the two injured digits only for chord work.

Let's get rid of one myth right here! One common myth floating around is that jazz music is complicated. Some people have the idea that it can only be learned by unraveling the deep mysteries of the inner being like it's some sort of mystical experience that requires years of learning theories, scales and chords. That thought alone is overwhelming and as a result, we need to refocus our attention to one thing keeping it simple.

If you seriously want to become a better jazz guitar player, then keeping it simple is all you need to get where you want to go. Start with the basics. You already know that you'll need some knowledge of jazz guitar scales and chords. You'll also need a mentor or a teacher who can help you develop your talent and skill and lastly, you'll need to begin developing confidence in your playing ability (this means practicing what you've learned). For the new player, these basic activities will help you progress in your learning and soon, you'll be looking for the intermediate and advanced teachings in jazz guitar!

The first step to learning how to play jazz guitar is to invest in some jazz guitar lessons. In the basic type of lesson, you should be learning the different scales and chords from a teacher who isn't trying to impress you with his or her blinding knowledge and ego. Instead, find a teacher who keeps it simple so that you can grow as a student.

Know that you have to invest some time into your playing and practice! One of the players I met used to avidly videotape his playing the gypsy jazz guitar so that he could improve his playing technique. Another woman I met used to listen to a melody over and over again until she had it solidly in her mind. As she listened to the melody, she attempted to memorize it and recreate it on her guitar. In fact, she's memorized a lot of tunes that way. A few years ago, I knew of a student who used to go over the lesson he just learned for hours, and I literally mean hours, until he knew it inside and out. I think he was just looking for an excuse to play, though, because even after he knew the lesson, he didn't quit.

Before you get out there and start buying your jazz guitar amps and other gear, consider if you'll have the time to do the basic things you need to do to learn all about playing jazz guitar. Set your learning and practice habit up for success by keeping it simple and you will reap the results of your investment!

7 Tips For How To Play A Guitar

This article contains seven tips for how to play a guitar. If you read and follow these tips, they will help you achieve your musical goals.
1. Pick a guitar that's right for you
Take the time to pick out the right guitar for your needs. You should like the way it looks and the way it sounds. It should also be the right size for your body. Finally, the strings should be close enough to the fretboard that it is easy to press down the strings to make chords and notes.
The more you like your guitar, the more you'll want to play it.
2. Create Your Own Practice Space
You should practice in the same place every day. If you have the space, it's best to make a place that's just for guitar practice. All you need is a comfortable chair without arms, a music stand or small table, and good lighting so that you can see what you're doing. If possible, a place to put your guitar when you're not using it would be helpful, too.
3. Find a Teacher
Find a guitar teacher you like, and take at least one or two lessons. Or, find a group class. Group classes, offered at community colleges or adult education centers, can be a better value than private lessons. Either way, it's good to have at least a few lessons with a teacher so that you can avoid developing bad habits.
4. Practice Every Day
For best results and continuous improvement of your playing, try to practice every single day. Your playing will improve faster with short daily practice sessions than it will with longer practice sessions that take place less often -- even if the total practice time is the same.
5. Play For Other People
Once you've learned a few pieces, or songs, that you can play all the way through without mistakes, play them for a friend or family member. When you can do that without making mistakes, try playing at a local open mike or at your place of worship. This will really build your confidence.
6. Play With Other People
Another way to improve both your confidence and your ability is to play with another person. You probably know one or two people who play instruments and like the same kind of music as you. Arrange to get together and play some songs that you all know, or learn some songs together.
7. Learn Some Music Theory
Learning some basic music theory might seem dull, but it will help you in the long run. For starters, learn how scales and chords work. Any good teacher should be able to help you with this, or you can use a theory book or a web site.

guitar tab (from a song) is transcribed or written by people and submitted to a site like
ultimate-guitar.com. Tab is a very simple system that can be read by anyone, even
children.

2. First Time is the Hardest, if You can Get a Teacher, by All Means Do So Playing your
first few chords or verse is like learning to swim. I will admit. When I had learned by
myself through guitar tabs and free lessons online, it took quite some time (weeks).
Learning from a teacher accelerates your learning curve a lot. As much as five fold. If
not, by all means you can learn by yourself. A site like justinguitar.com or cyberfret.com
is always a good start to learn.

3. Start from Your Favourite Song We humans learn fastest by combining positive
emotions into our daily guitar practice. Getting to play your catchy tune on your guitar is
the most satisfying feeling you will get. I swear on this. Dedicate yourself to complete
the song. On the other hand, playing and singing a song can be tough. If you can do it,
why not? Otherwise, take your time learning to strum chords(A,B,C,D,E,F,G) or pluck
notes(individual notes on guitar).

Many of us had this dream when we started learning to play jazz guitar. We saw ourselves on stage under bright lights whipping out this great improvised solo. Maybe our dreams went into even more details. We saw the other band members, the equipment (like jazz guitar amps) and the people who would listen to our music.

So like any newbie, we decided to trot off and do what it took to learn how to play. We enrolled in lessons and things started off with a bang, but as the weeks went on, our excitement started to subside. In fact the excitement that we initially had was vaguely remembered as situations came up that interrupted our lesson and practice time. Stop the madness! Realize your dream and get back on track with playing jazz guitar!

1) Remember why you enrolled in jazz guitar lessons in the first place.

If you want to spruce up your lesson time and your practice time, have something to look forward to like listening to your favorite tune and attempting to transcribe it. Many people approach their lessons and practice time without having any goals, and they wonder why they don't feel like they are learning anything. Cure that by finding a tune you like to play and then take steps to learn how to recreate it. This is a sure way to break the monotony of learning how to play the scales and arpeggios.

2) Be committed to having quality lesson and practice time.

Be committed to the time you have set aside to learn and improve your skills. When you're committed to the lesson, it becomes easy to eliminate the distractions because you're focused on learning something new. Have a set schedule for your lesson and practice times and stick with it. Regularly scheduled lessons will bring results and those results will fuel your excitement for becoming a jazz guitar player. You should also be determined to have a learning goal that you want to accomplish during this time.

3) Practice expands your music vocabulary.

As you practice what you've learned in the lesson, you'll definitely notice that you're learning something. Consider adding to your practice time or learning your favorite tune. Let's say you hear a tune on gypsy jazz guitar that you like and you listen to it over and over so that you have it memorized in your mind. During your practice time, you learn to work with this tune. You'll recreate it as you heard it and you'll learn to play it in different chords as well. This activity is actually expanding your musical vocabulary. It will help when you want to play an improv or even a solo act.

Guitar School Tips

Practice Regularly
Try and form a template for practice. So for example start with half an hour of hand warm up and patterns across the neck. This can be just chromatic runs for example up four frets starting at fret 1 on the bottom E string so 1234 and down four 4321 then move up the same string to fret 2 and up four 1234 and down four 4321.
Repeat all the way up the neck then start the same pattern on next string A and continue. This may seem tedious however concentrate on precision of picking up down, up down and curb mistakes. Start slowly with no mistakes and increase speed but only when mistakes are avoided. Then try a set time on chords, strumming, licks, play a song etc so the practice time is constructive and disciplined.

Picking Techniques
Whilst using a plectrum try three basic methods. Down strokes are simply always having the pick in a downwards motion. This is obviously for picking out notes in a run, lick or scale but not strumming to chords as that is another technique.
With downstrokes the runs can sound sometimes better by deadening the strings or muting. This is achieved by placing the palm of your picking hand on the strings and resting it against the bridge which will stop the strings from vibrating so much and hence give a nice duded sound. Experiment with exactly where you are placing the palm and the tension on resting against the bridge.

Your Progression
When it comes to learning such new skills patience will be your guide. It is important to progress slowly one step at a time though we all want it now without the effort so it is very easy to get frustrated which will take away your concentration. Try first really slowly to master a clean picked run, pay attention to precession of the notes picked.
Even if it is very slow that is fine. It is simply one step at a time, but those steps should be dealt with properly.
When slowly you are sure then take the speed up just a notch and try the run again but the same rules will apply practice until it is right and only then move on to the next speed level. If you falter you will have to go back to the first speed and progress through the levels again.

Guitar Strings - A Beginners Guide

If you are just starting out learning to play guitar, the first time you have to change your strings can be a bit daunting. If you look at the number of different sets of strings available it can be really difficult to decide which set is best for your guitar. Changing you strings can also change the way your guitar sounds, so where do you start.

There are two basic types of string - plain and wound. A plain string is constructed of a single material such as steel, nylon or gut. A wound string is constructed by tightly winding one material around a core material.

The requirements of strings for acoustic and electric guitars differ, so strings are usually designed for a particular type of guitar. For acoustic guitars the strings have to provide a good amount of volume as well as sound good. Strings for electric guitars do not need to provide so much volume as the pick up will amplify the sound produced.

Classical guitars traditionally used gut strings but these have largely given way to nylon strings. Some guitarists prefer gut strings for there warmer sound, but they suffer with problems staying in tune an can break easily. Modern gut strings are usually wrapped in metal.

For Acoustic and electric guitars steel strings are used. These strings usually have a steel core with a winding of bronze, copper or nickel. The cross section of the winding material may be round, which gives a round wound string, or flat giving a flat wound string. Round wound strings are very popular and give the brightest and clearest sound with a good sustain. The flat wound string gives a smoother surface and reduces finger noise when playing.

More expensive steel strings are completed with a protective polymer or metal coating. This is to help avoid the problem of corrosion that occurs due to the build up of sweat and chemicals left on the strings after playing.

Strings are supplied in different sizes or gauges. The gauge is the diameter of the string. This is normally given in thousands of an inch but sometimes metric sizes are used. The six strings provided in a set will each have a different diameter. The set of strings will quote either the gauge of the first string, the first and the last string or sometimes the gauge of each string in the set.

Lighter gauge strings (typically in range .008 - .046) are easier to play as they require less pressure to hold them down. The downside is that they have less volume and the length of time a note sounds when played, known as the sustain, is shorter.

Heavier gauge strings (typically in range .012 - .056) require a lot more tension to get in tune, and so need more pressure to hold down a note or chord, making them harder to play. They do, however, produce a louder and clearer sound.

Be careful if changing the gauge of strings on your guitar. The new gauge strings may suffer from buzzing when played. This is due to the strings hitting the fret when vibrating. If this happens, the height of the strings above the fret will have to be adjusted. You may also have problems if the gauge of the string is too big for the string groove in the nut.

As well as the gauge of the string, the materials used in the construction of the strings also affect the type of sound obtained.

Strings constructed with bronze produce a bright crisp sound, but the bright quality soon fades. Many guitarists like the faded in sound though. Phosphor Bronze strings produce a warmer and darker sound, which does not fade like the bronze string. Nickel Plated strings are commonly used on modern electric guitars. They provide a bright sound with longer sustain. Pure Nickel strings have a smoother warmer sound than nickel plated strings, but not as much volume. These were popular in the 50's and are now enjoying a come back. Stainless Steel strings are very hard and resistant to corrosion. They produce a bright sound and the longest note sustain of any string material. However, due to their hardness, they do cause more rapid fret wear.

Take some time to study the different makes, gauges and materials of string sets available. Try to stick to the same gauge that is currently on your guitar to avoid any fitting problems. Then just have some fun trying out different brands and materials.

Technique
Technique, of course, is one of the key elements you must address when you learn any instrument but especially the guitar. Many famous, and not so famous, lead guitarists will tell you they never stop learning, never stop practicing and never stop perfecting their style. Performing with a guitar is an expression of your talent, you need to practice and perfect your craft.

Position
Most people don't realize that when you first start out learning it is helpful to practice sitting down. This gives you much more control over your instrument and allows you to concentrate on the actual music you are practicing. This might be difficult for some but whether you decide to sit or to remain standing you must always remember to have both feet flat on the ground and to sit with your back straight. This will help you to avoid back strain or injury.

Hand Position
When you are learning you will soon realize that one of the most important things you will learn is how to position your hands. If you start from the beginning with the correct hand positions you will find it much easier later to move through the different chords with ease. It also lets you react quickly if one of your fellow musicians has a problem and makes a mistake. At first it will seem very difficult especially if you have been using incorrect hand positions in the past. Stick with it, practice hand positions regularly, it will pay off in the end when you sound professional.

Attitude
Attitude, and by this we don't mean having a bad attitude, is a very important thing to pay attention to. Attitude affects your body language and this is important. Attitude and body language go together to give you the confidence you will need to perform as a lead guitarist. Watch successful lead guitarists and see how they always look so much more confident than their back-up guitarists. That's attitude!

Discipline
When you first learn to play lead guitar it is easy to be disciplined. Your initial enthusiasm makes it easy to be able to spend hours trying new music and techniques. As you improve it is easy to settle in to a level that is good but maybe not excellent. It takes discipline to maintain a level of practice that will constantly improve your skills. Discipline is what separates an average guitarist from a brilliant one. One good tip is to write out a program and set a schedule with small goals along the way to keep you motivated and on track.

Leadership skills
Leadership skills are important to have if you want to be the one playing the lead. You will be the one people look to for guidance, you will be responsible for all the musicians in the group. You need to be able to pay attention to what everyone is playing and be able to cover mistakes that may happen during a song. This may take a while to get really good at but you should always be training yourself. Try to listen while you are playing and you will improve. This skill will grow if you start right from the beginning when you learn to play lead guitar.

It is really exciting to play guitar! You can experiment with chords in a completely different way than on the piano. The construction of the guitar and the tuning of the strings allow you to find these easy sounding chords!

You will first learn a very easy form of tablature with only numbers. Tablature staffs written the ordinary way can easily be displayed in a distorted way in articles like this one.

To show how to read the tab notation I give you this note to play on your guitar:

The first number tells you to play the third fret. The number after the slash indicates which string to play. This means that you are to play the third fret on the second string. That will be the note D on an commonly tuned guitar.

Open chords are used in many types of guitar tunes. First you have to know what an open chord is. It usually refers to the most common chords played in the first position with some open strings, that is, strings that are not pressed down.

You will start with an ordinary C-chord. It looks like this:

C: 3/5 2/4 0/3 1/2 0/1

Now you are going to try the nice sounding but easy Fmaj7 chord by changing two fingers. Here it is:

Fmaj7: 3/4 2/3 1/2 0/1

these two chords can be played together as an intro to your new song for example.

You can play them like this:

C / / / Fmaj7 / / / C / / / Fmaj7 / / /

We will now take a look at a chord you will find by sliding the Fmaj7 chord up two frets. You will get the chord G6:

G6: 5/4 4/3 3/2 0/1

We can now play the following chord progression:

You will now test a chord progression starting with the common open A-minor chord that can be used together with the previous progression. Here is the A-minor chord:

By sliding this chord up two frets you will get a nice sounding chord that can be called Bm7add11:

Bm7add11: 0/5 4/4 4/3 3/2 0/1

The last chord in this progression is an open A-minor 7th chord in the fifth position:

The guitar chord progression with the previous chord shapes will look as follows:

Let's take a look at the open E-major chord:

If you continue to slide this chord up you will get an A-major add 9 chord:

If you move the chord up two more frets you will get a B sounding chord that can be called Bsus/E:

These three chords can replace the more common E, A and B chords in a progression.

Starting with the open E-major chord you will now learn a flamenco guitar sounding progression

First, the E-major chord:

Now, slide this chord up one fret and you will find the three open strings sounding the same but blended with a F-major chord on the strings that are pressed down. An interesting morish sounding chord. Here it is written with tabs:

The next chord to use in this flamenco progression is the E-minor 7 chord you will get by sliding the chord two frets further up the fretboard:

There are some very fun and exciting things that are unique to the guitar. One of these unique items is called finger tapping. Although the theory behind finger tapping is nothing new, there is just something about guitar player finger tapping that sounds totally cool. Many other instruments such as the piano and saxophone have tried for years to emulate the sound of a guitar finger tapping. At the end of the day however, there’s nothing like a real guitar player finger tapping like pro.

Let’s take a look at 6 easy steps to learn beginner guitar finger tapping.
1. With your left hand, place your first finger on the second string, fifth fret.
2. With your right first finger pluck the second string on the ninth fret.
3. With your third finger strike the seventh fret
4. With your right first finger strike the ninth fret.
5. Quickly lift your third finger off of the seventh fret
6. Repeat steps 2 to 5

Let’s take a look at a longer explanation of what is occurring.
1. With your left hand, place your first finger on the second string, fifth fret: Remember to use proper left hand technique and place your left fingers just before the fret to get the best sound out of your guitar.

2. With your right first finger pluck the second string on the ninth fret: if you are holding the guitar pick you will want to place it somewhere else for right now. Later on as you improve your finger tapping technique you can place your guitar pick in between another set of fingers.

3. With your third finger strike the seventh fret: This is a technique called a hammer on, and will require practice in order to get the note sounding loud enough to be heard. If you have a guitar amplifier; turning up the volume will help you to hear your hammer on notes until your fingers are strong enough to not need extra volume.

4. With your right first finger strike the ninth fret: If you are having a hard time hammering on the note with your first finger try placing your middle finger over your first finger to give it some extra strength.

5. Quickly lift your third finger off of the seventh fret: You can either lift your left hand third finger as soon as your right hand first finger taps its first note, or you can quickly lift your left hand third finger away from the fret as you pluck the ninth fret with your right first finger.

6. Repeat steps 2 to 5: You now have the basic foundation to begin finger tapping!

If you're a constant-playing guitarist, you know there comes a time where you're going to have to clean a guitar one way or the other. The body doesn't shine anymore, the strings are sticky, and the tailpieces look grimy and gross.
It's not a fun task most of the time, but cleaning a guitar of your own can elongate the life-span of the instrument and just make it look great. Check out these cleaning tips in order to give your guitar more life.

* Scrub into the details of your tailpiece.

If you don't pay much attention to your guitar hardware, you'll notice how much grime builds up over time. It's an irritating task but with so much dirt, only a small sponge or old toothbrush can really do the job. When you're done, it'll feel a lot better running your hands across it for your next palm-muted section.

* Household olive oil is good for your fret board.

If thinking about how to clean a guitar just feels like a chore, do just a little bit at a time when it's convenient. When it comes time to change your strings, wipe down the frets in between each string with an old rag and some olive oil. This will make your neck smooth and shimmer in the light.

* Greasy hands make greasy strings.

Most of the time, the way to keep a guitar clean is to prevent it from getting too dirty. If you're strings feel grimy, it may be because you ten to jam right after having some dinner. Wash your hands off and you'll keep your strings drier and better for optimum playing speed.

* Make your guitar body shine again with some glass cleaner.

For beginning guitarists that don't know where to start when cleaning a guitar, they sometimes get roped into paying for expensive cleaning polishes at their local music store. Usually, for such expensive polishes they're not worth the money.

If you use a household glass cleaner instead, you won't see much of a difference. Just spray some on a rag and rub down your guitar until it shines.

I honestly don't like cleaning my guitar, but helping to keep your guitar playable for longer periods is a very positive thing to me. If you want your instrument to last longer and stay reliable, care for it and keep it clean.

Practice daily: Yes! Practice daily! Not less than two hours a day (one in the morning, and one in the afternoon, evening or night). I told you that it would be hard.

Practice efficiently: During the time segments you assigned to practicing, do just that. Practice. Practice the lessons, exercises, scales, chords, pieces you must practice. Be clearly sincere with yourself. Don't fool yourself, thinking that you are doing your practice when you're only playing something you like to play and not what you must play.

Play with others: Whenever possible, specially when you have reached a playing knowledge and skills (and it isn't required very much), play sometimes with other guitar players.

You'll be surprised about how much you can learn.

Look for a teacher: Yes. Look for a teacher. If you are learning to play guitar on your own, there'll be a time when you'll need the guidance and advices of a guitar teacher.

There are many things than cannot be written and read. They must be shown and explained over the guitar itself. And I guarantee you that you'll be amazed about what you will learn.

Remember. Attitude, change your listening habits, practice daily and efficiently, play with others whenever possible, and have a teacher to make your knowledge perfect.

There's no mystery in learning to play the guitar, but though rewarding it's a way of hard work.

Take it like that, and you'll become a very good guitar player.

If you have to play the guitar indoor, then you should opt for a 40-watt amplifier. However, if you have to play outdoor then you should buy high-output guitar amps. How to read the chord diagrams
This article uses a simple text based form of chord diagram. Each of the six strings on the guitar is represented with 3 numbers, like this: 1/2/3. The first number is the string (the strings are numbered form 1 through 6, where 1 is the thinnest, or high E string, and 6 is the thickest, or low E string. The second number is the fret to press down on, in this case the second fret. The third number is which finger to use, in this case the third finger.

So 1/2/3 means press down on the first string, at the second fret, using the third finger. The letter X in place of the second and third numbers would mean don't play that string as part of the chord; the number 0 would mean play the open, unfretted string.

A whole chord diagram would look like this:

To make this chord, which happens to be a C chord, you don't play the sixth string at all, you fret the fifth string at the third fret with your third finger, fret the fourth string at the second fret with your second finger, play the open third string, fret the second string at the first fret with your first finger, and play the open first string.

Think about why you want to learn to play guitar

You'll only become a good guitar player if you understand why you want to learn to play. So ask yourself, do you really want to do this? It might be that what you want to do is learn to play a musical instrument, and you think that the guitar is the easiest one to choose because there are so many books and websites showing you how. You might have chosen the guitar because guitars are cheaper and smaller than, say, a piano. These aren't really the right reasons - if in reality you want to play piano, but you chose the guitar because it seems more practical, your heart will never really be in your guitar playing, and even with a teaching system as good as Jamorama you'll never get very good at it.

Know your guitar playing goals

Once you're sure you really do want to play guitar, think about the sort of guitar player you want to be. Do you want to be the next Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen? If so, you're going to get real sick, real quick of strumming along to "Michael Row the Boat Ashore". On the other hand, you might just want to be able to accompany yourself singing a few popular tunes, in which case you're going to lose interest fast if your teacher is trying to get you excited about Pentatonic Scales and Mixolydian Modes.

When I started playing years ago, all I wanted to do was play punk, but I got bogged down in scales and keys, and nearly gave up. If someone had just shown me a few power chords, I'd have been close to doing what I really wanted to do. I'd have started having fun, my confidence would have grown, and the rest would have followed.

Make sure you know what you want to learn to play, whether it's rock, classical, Spanish, or whatever. Then make sure your guitar teacher is happy to guide you down the right path, or that you buy the right book.

Try before you buy

Cupboards, wardrobes, closets and attics all over the world are full of unused guitars, bought by people, or for people, who didn't get very far before they gave up. (There are also plenty of music stores out there who will happily sell you just such a guitar, with no money-back guarantee if you simply get bored!) So don't rush out and buy a guitar, especially a new one.

If you can, find a friend who already plays. Ask your work colleagues, your school friends, your kids' friends. Chances are there'll be someone who will be willing to lend, or even give you their old "beginner" guitar. If you get along with the guitar, they might sell it to you, which will be much cheaper than buying new, and less hassle than buying from eBay - I know from personal experience that not everyone knows how to pack a guitar for posting.

Take a Friend for a Test Drive

Would you buy a car before you learned to drive? Almost definitely not. It's pretty hard to take it out for a test drive if you don't know how. But it's amazing how many people buy a guitar before they can play. You don't want to be one of those people. Before you make the plunge and buy your first guitar, talk to someone who already plays, and if possible, get him or her to go with you to the guitar store. That way, you can get the guitar "test-driven" for you.

Most musicians can still remember what it was like when they started out, and should stop you making the same mistakes. I remember the first electric guitar I ever had - the action was set so high, it was almost impossible to fret the string properly. I didn't know any better - I thought it was just because I was a beginner. Again, this nearly made me give up. Luckily, someone showed me what was wrong, and once I got it sorted out, my progress was much faster.

The man behind the music.

When we think of innovation and talent in the guitar world, Slash is usually at the top of the list. With many years in the spotlight as the lead guitarist for Guns N' Roses, Slash left the band in 1996 to pursue a solo career after the band had musical disagreements.

Since then, Slash and two other members that left Guns N' Roses with him (Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum) have formed the very successful band, Velvet Revolver.

Born in London, England, in 1965, Slash had exposure to music from a very young age. Both of his parents worked in the music industry. His mother designed clothes for the likes of David Bowie while his father designed album covers for world famous musicians.

When Slash was eleven, he went with his Mother to Los Angeles. It's hard to believe that the rock star we know and love today had a hard time fitting in as a child. With his unique style, long hair, and laid back attitude, fitting in with the other kids wasn't an easy task.

In later years, Slash's parents broke up and he went to live with his Grandmother. His life, while we may see it as glamorous now, started like many other households around the world.

With the frustration of not fitting in and his parents broken marriage, Slash found himself riding BMX. Biking proved to be a near perfect match for Slash, that is, until he received his first guitar from his Grandmother.

The guitar she gave him wasn't exactly glamorous. It had one string remaining (low E) but he used that guitar as the foundation to his future success. After a new set of strings, Slash's priorities started to change.

His promising career as a talented BMX rider started to take a backseat to his guitar. Soon, Slash was practicing from dawn until dusk. The more he practiced, the more his school work suffered. Eventually, Slash dropped out of High School in grade eleven to pursue his dreams of stardom.

Like many guitarists, Slash came across his fair share of obstacles in the music world. After teaming up with his friend Steven Adler, he created the Road Crew. The band was made of the right material, but needed a lead singer to seal their success. That's when Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin came into the picture. They merged members and created Guns N' Roses.

The new band made airplay with the infamous song "Sweet Child O Mine." While the band was on the top of their game, Slash fell deeper into drugs and alcohol. While the entire band was using, Slash seemed to be trapped by drugs and unable to escape. It would take almost dying beside an elevator before he began to smarten up.

After years of massive success on the world stage, the band took a little break from touring. Meanwhile, Slash wanted to get back to his roots and created Snake Pit. The new band was well received and hit the road. Instead of the usual stadiums which Slash was accustomed to playing in, he preferred to stick to the local club scene where he could be more interactive with his audiences.

When Axl and the rest of the band returned to the recording studio, tension rose between Axl and the other members of the band. Axl wasn't involved with creating the record, so Slash filled the gap and produced the album himself.

Eventually, Slash left Guns N' Roses to pursue his own solo career. He did work with Alice Cooper and performed on tour with him. This wasn't enough for Slash. While he enjoyed playing with these world famous guitarists, he had the itch for another band.

The wounds were still fresh from Guns N' Roses, so Slash had the idea of creating a compilation album consisting of musicians from around the world. When he began to play with some old buddies from Guns N' Roses who also left the band, Velvet Revolver was created.

Ironically, they went through more problems with their lead singer but ended up with Scott Weiland from The Stone Temple Pilots. The band has topped the charts with hits like "Slither." You can't keep Slash down, and the creation of Velvit Revolver was living proof of that.

The Technique

If you want to play like Slash, you need to know some of his techniques. Slash was completely self taught and practiced along to his favorite bands to become a better musician. The first step you can take to become a better player is listen to a variety of music and try to play along with it.

Slash hated to replicate any guitarist, rather, he let their style influence his. That's why he wrote so many fresh licks, because he wasn't trying to be anybody but himself.

As far as scales are concerned, he relied many on the minor/major pentatonic scales in addition to some mixolydian and Dorian scales for his solos. This may come as a surprise to some, considering how overused these scales have become. The trick to keeping your sound and solos original is to use a variety of techniques coupled with your own ideas.

Slash favored vibrato and using hammer on/ pull off's to create speed. His right picking hand isn't used for speed. Instead, he uses his picking hand to add a percussive feel to his solos.

The more you change the rhythms in your solo, the more unique and intricate it will become. The solo will take on a life of its own. The bottom line is this: put your heart into the solo, add in some ordinary techniques and cool effects and you have yourself a world class solo.

The key ingredient here is practice. Regardless of what techniques you use, you have to know how to apply them in such a way as to move your audience.

The Gear

It's no secret that Slash has had a love affair with the Gibson Les Paul for quite a while. He was playing on a Jackson for a while until his manager found him a '59 Les Paul. However, it was actually a handmade copy made by luthier Chris Derrig. Slash used it for most of his gigs but retired it after too much tour abuse.

To honor Slash for playing their guitars, Gibson has released two limited-edition custom Slash Les Pauls. This is in addition to the approximate 100 guitars already in his collection!

In the studio, Slash likes to experiment with the B.C Rich Mockingbird. His live sound is always with a Les Paul.

As far as Slash's effects pedals are concerned, he takes a different approach. He uses a Dunlop Crybaby, Boss graphic EQ GE-7 and a Boss DD5 digital delay ...a very modest rig.

Now here's the surprise: He uses up to eight wah-wah pedals! Why so many? On stage, Slash likes to move around. By using so many wah-wah pedals, he can easily move around and be near one when he needs it for a solo. That way he didn't have to stand in front of a pedal waiting for the solo to come around. He only used one at a time.

As far as amps are concerned, he prefers the tone of a Marshall. Like Gibson, Marshall also has limited-edition amps in Slash's honor.

The Songs

The song that launched Slash into stardom was "Sweet Child O' Mine." This riff has become a right of passage for many guitarists. Unlike most standard guitar riffs, Sweet Child O' Mine uses some melodic arpeggiated chords found higher up on the neck.

This rhythm is the backbone to the song and has been the signature riff of the song since its creation. Without it, Guns N' Roses may have never been successful. It was the first single from the band to hit the airwaves. This rock ballad has earned the reputation as one of rock's best riffs.

Electric Acoustic Guitars

An acoustic electric guitar belongs to the acoustic family rather than electric guitar family. Electric acoustic guitars are steel string guitars which are fitted with pickups rather than using a separate microphone like an acoustic model.

The pickups are piezoelectric pickups, Piezoelectric pickups are best known as the under saddle pickups used to amplify acoustic guitars. Sometimes seen referred to as "Electrets" and the first company to design crystal pickups was Brush Development Company in the 1910's although they never actually made them themselves commercially but rather licensed the concept. Piezoelectric pickups are pickups that create a signal through its actual vibration.

They are regarded as acoustic guitars rather than electric guitars because the pickups do not produce a signal directly from the vibration of the strings, but rather from the vibration of the guitar top or body. Guitarists have long been troubled by electric acoustic amplification, which tends to suffer from excessive feedback and poor sound quality. Many traditional piezo electric acoustics produce a poor ribbon transducer sound that does not necessarily replicate a true acoustic sound. An electric acoustic guitar is made of wood and has six strings and features a round sound hole that amplifies the sound of the vibrations that the strings cause. If the guitar had no sound hole, it would be almost impossible to hear anything. To change the sound that is heard, you need to alter the length of the string, which is altering the tension. To do this, you need to press down on the string over any fret and play it. Doing this will change the vibration frequency, which is turn changes the sound that is heard.

With an acoustic electric model, you have the option of plugging it in or not, the sound made by an acoustic electric guitar when it is not plugged in is the same sound as you can get by playing an acoustic guitar.

When it is plugged in, it sounds like an electric guitar. If you want both types of guitar or can not decide between the two, it may be an idea to invest in an acoustic electric guitar so you can choose which type you want to play at which time, depending on your mood or your music.
