An acoustic guitar is excellent to learn on because you don't need things like an amplifier, power, speakers or leads as you will with an electric guitar and because an acoustic guitar has no volume control you can play it only loud enough for yourself to hear during practice sessions thereby keeping mistakes to yourself.
If you're not sure which type of guitar you want to play ask yourself what kind of music you like and find out what type of guitar is being played by watching a video of a particular song or band.
