Rock finger style

In rock music, most guitarists use a flatpick for its "solid" and "sharp" sound and because they are playing single notes rather than counterpoint. However, this is not always true. Ritchie Blackmore played some riffs and solos, including the opening of Smoke on the Water, with his fingers while holding the pick between his teeth. Yngwie Malmsteen has also used this technique. A few rock guitarists play entirely with their fingers. Such players include Jeff Beck, Lindsey Buckingham, Robbie Krieger of The Doors, Ry Cooder, Derek Trucks and Mark Knopfler.
